A fingerprint attendance system for schools and universities

A student places a finger on a terminal at the door. The terminal confirms who they are, and Attendee records them as present in the class that is running. No cards, no signatures, no one signing for a friend.

How fingerprint attendance works

  • Each student is enrolled once on the terminal, using one or more fingers.
  • When a class starts, students scan as they walk in.
  • The terminal matches the finger and sends the student number to Attendee.
  • Attendee links the scan to the class running at that time and updates the register live.

Why fingerprints beat cards and registers

A card or a signature can be lent to a friend. A fingerprint cannot. There are no cards to lose or forget, and nothing to total by hand at the end of the term.

Failed and unknown scans are recorded too, so repeated attempts show up for review.

What happens to the fingerprint

Matching is performed by the terminal. A copy of each fingerprint is also kept in the platform, encrypted, so it can be loaded onto any terminal when classes or rooms change. Fingerprint images are not stored.

Schools should tell students and guardians before fingerprints are enrolled. See the biometric data notice for details.

Supported devices

Attendee works with Hikvision access terminals. It also has an edge client for a small computer with a fingerprint sensor, which stores scans locally and syncs them when the connection returns.

When the internet is down

Scans are saved on the device first and uploaded when the connection is back. A unique ID on every record means a scan that arrives twice is only counted once.

Questions people ask

Fingerprint matching happens on the terminal, and any copy kept in Attendee is encrypted. Staff only see the data their role allows. Schools should inform students and guardians before enrolment.

No. Each scan is matched to the student's own fingerprint at the terminal, so a friend cannot check in on their behalf.

A student can enrol up to ten fingers, so an injured finger does not lock them out. A clean, dry finger scans best.

Not to take attendance. Devices keep recording offline and sync later.
